Tuesday, Sept. 28th 6-8pm Instructor-Phil Pope

Well, no one would ever say that Jack Gartside wasn't passionate about his fly fishing.  He was innovative, and tied many flies that were "out of the box."  Below shows one of the variations of the gurgler.  Nothing else looks like it.  Fly shop owners joke that the fly doesn't sell, but it sure catches fish!  Recently, Tom Rosenbauer, author of the "Orvis Fly Fishing Guide" as one of the best saltwater flies in his podcast.  The gurgler can be tied large and small and many different ways.  It is as varied as a tiny beetle to a large saltwater baitfish.  Unfortunately, Jack Gartside passed away this year.  His tenacious innovation and contributions to fly fishing will long be appreciated.

The Hesitant Hiker (2002) is the chronicle of our friend Tom Oldt, backpacking in the Wind River Mountains in the fall of 2001.  He gives great insight into preparing for an extended backpacking trip, when to splurge, when to be conservative.  (See the checklist!)  His satirical wit has never been so polished, and entertaining.  There is no doubt that he sees the world very differently after this trip.
